I would like to tell you a story…
There was a man whose compassion for people was so strong, it changed a town. Truly it did. Right here in Minnesota. I’m sure you know the town, but I don’t know if you’ve ever heard his name.
At 10:00 am on December 26, 1862, 38 Dakota Indians were hanged in Mankato MN. A stain and a massacre that would set a wound that would seem never heal. It kept the Dakotas from setting foot near Mankato for almost 100 years.
A YMCA director in Mankato named Jim Buckley heard a preacher was coming to town and decided to check him out. He was no ordinary preacher, he was Martin Luther King Jr., and listening to his words, Jim felt his own heart warmed for reconciliation.
Jim Buckley started a movement of reconciliation with 2 of his friends, Ames and Bud. They brought Dakota people back into the culture of Mankato - erecting monuments and memorials to those lost in the tragedy of 1862. You can’t go through Mankato without seeing Jim’s influence and work to reconcile the people of Mankato with the Dakota tribe.
Jim Buckley was my grandfather. He passed away in December of 2020. I can’t deny that his legacy has changed me, and has inspired me to be who I am today.
People have a way of shaping us, don’t they? Think about it, We all have stories. We all have reasons why those stories resonate with us. Each story is important because it’s shaped us and molded us into the people we are today. But it is how we relate to our own stories that influence who we are as business professionals, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and faith leaders. Most likely there was some sort of influence that pushed us to pursue the profession we did.

Ben Branum and I (Jon Oney), have spent 16+ years telling stories through graphics, animation, and video. We like how stories can keep us connected to our roots like my grandfather and share how they can change us.
